I began singing the first line, ‘I love her, I love her / though she is not my first love.’ At first I thought, this is not the direction I want to go, i.e. ‘you are second place.’ But as I continued writing, the concept made sense. I’m not saying to my wife, you are second to my first wife. I’m simply stating a reality of my life as it is now – I love a woman who is special and wonderful, and though she is not my first love, I love her and will always love her.
