I had this concept for a song about being a ‘regular guy’ that morphed into being an ‘ordinary guy.’ Parallel to that idea is the fact that, though I might be able to write good songs and am a musician, I am definitely not ‘hip’! And I’m okay with that. The concept is so familiar that it is hard to say something new about it. What is new is the use of ‘ordinary’ as a noun rather than a descriptive adjective. I think this, combined with the rhythm that is similar to ‘Beautiful Heart’ gives the song a playful, light flavor. The lyrical twist is, being ordinary, familiar, commonplace, normal is, these days, unique, and that’s what women, or at least some women, really want in their men.
lyrics
I applied to be cool but I missed the deadline
I tried to be hip but I failed the test
I thought I’d stand out like a big, bold headline
But it’s the same old story, I’m no different than the rest
I seldom go out, I’m a homebody
I sit on my couch and watch the world go by
So if you want me to be the life of this party
Well I’m sorry to say but I’m probably not your guy
But if you don't mind my sameness
And if you can suffer my lameness
I’ll be your ordinary, yeah, yeah, yeah
I'll be your ordinary, yeah, yeah, yeah
Not necessarily your fantasy
But if you like just plain, old me
Then I'll be, I’ll be your ordinary
Lately it seems love‘s been forgotten
And faithfulness is such a rarity
Well, my sense of style may be worse than rotten
But I’m one-of-a-kind when it comes to loyalty
So if you don't mind my sameness
And if you can suffer my lameness
I’ll be your ordinary, yeah, yeah, yeah
I'll be your ordinary, yeah, yeah, yeah
Not necessarily your fantasy
But if you like just plain, old me
Then I'll be, I’ll be your ordinary
So commonplace and unexceptional
Familiar as the air you breathe
And as next to normal as any man can be
And if that makes me unique
Then I’m happy, I’m happy to be
I’ll be your ordinary
So if you don't mind my sameness
And if you can suffer my lameness
I’ll be your ordinary
I’ll be your ordinary
I’ll be your ordinary, yeah, yeah, yeah
I'll be your ordinary, yeah, yeah, yeah
Not necessarily your fantasy
But if you like just plain, old me
Then I'll be, I’ll be your ordinary
I'll be your ordinary, yeah, yeah, yeah
I'll be your ordinary, yeah, yeah, yeah
I'll be your ordinary
